Box Jellyfish are the most poisonous creature in the world.  They can kill an adult in a few minutes, so they should be treated with the utmost respect.

Whitsunday Islands rarely see Box jellyfish because of their location in opposite to where they travel on their way to Australia from overseas. In saying that, if you’re planning on going snorkeling, you should ask your tour operator about precautions just to be on the safe side.

You should always check the local box jellyfish forecast before you snorkel because they have been known to frequent this area.

Are there any currents?

There can be very strong currents around Whitsunday Island, so only experienced swimmers should attempt it. It’s best to go with a tour operator that knows where the safest spots are for you to swim.

Don’t I need a wetsuit for snorkeling at Airlie Beach?

You don’t need a 3mm wetsuit to snorkel at Airlie Beach.  It’s only 1-1.5 meters deep at most, so you don’t have to worry about being cold.  You will only need a wetsuit if you are planning on going snorkeling with the Great Barrier Reef tours that go out into the open sea.

What does Airlie Beach Snorkeling look like?

You can do this any time of year, but it’s best when the water is warm.  The coral is still growing at this beach location. You can see a large variety of fish and if you’re lucky, turtles!

It depends on which tour operator you choose to go with.  Some do shorter tours, while others do longer.  It’s best to get your Airlie Beach snorkeling done in the morning because it gets hotter during the day.

Can I snorkel with a baby?

You should take babies out snorkeling if your tour operator allows it.  Remember to bring sunscreen, a life vest and a good stroller for younger children.

After you’ve done your afternoon snorkeling tours, you can chill at the beach with an ice-cream and watch the sunset.  If you book a tour that lasts half a day or more, you can do some hiking or kayaking as well!

How much does it cost to go snorkeling at Airlie Beach?  For most tour operators, you will be charged $60AUD per adult and $40AUD per child (under 16 years old).

This price covers the boat ride and equipment.  

Most Airlie Beach day trips include the entrance fee for the Great Barrier Reef, but it can vary so please check before you book!

You should definitely spend some time in Airlie Beach if you do snorkeling tours.  It’s a nice town with lots to offer.  Most people just stay in the town center, but there are plenty of offshore accommodation options if you’re traveling with kids!
